Teaching philosophy
I adhere to the Counselor-Advocate-Scholar Model, which means I believe that knowledge should not be a stand-alone goal. Rather, knowledge gained should be knowledge used for the advancement of students’ communities and beyond. I believe my role as a psychologist extends beyond the traditional therapy room, and each counselor, learner, and producer of knowledge must find their perspective positions in the larger context of the communities they serve.
Nothing regarding psychological functioning is exempt from systems, culture, and the sociopolitical environment. Therefore, at the core of my work is the continual advancement in multicultural competency and engagement in social justice principles and ethics. I am a firm believer that oppression exists and it is up to all of us to eradicate it.
